The exhibition presents a new series of paintings inspired by the work of Francis Bacon. The dense compositions contain the recurring motifs of the artist’s iconography—eyes, mushrooms, characters—accentuated by multiple layers of color on platinum leaf. In Murakami’s work, the representation of flesh in motion is the pretext for a cosmology of chaotic motifs and colors.

Efiaimbelo, the Madagascan sculptor who died in 2006, owed his knowledge to his great-grandfather Soroboko. Over the years, he developed his art and passed it on to his son Jacques Jean Efiaimbelo and his grandson Jean Colomb Efiaimbelo, who became “disciples” of the art. Today, only five members of the clan perpetuate this unique practice in the same style as their distinguished inspirer.

This exhibition by Iván Argote at Perrotin Paris was conceived like an essay composed of sculptures, texts, photographs, illustrations, and films, in which the artist proposes a poetic, sociological, and political discussion of our relationship with history and our relationship with “the other.”

“The exhibition is focused on how borders separate people who all want the same things. I’m offering testimony to that—not through words but through actions. I raise questions, but I don’t give answers. Art isn’t about that.”

Established in 2005, Otani Workshop is representative of an exciting new wave of ceramic artists from Japan, blending time-honored Japanese artistic techniques with contemporary aesthetics. While it is true that the word workshop invites an assumption that it is a collective of artists, a factory, or even an amateur experiment, Otani Workshop is in fact the name of a single artist: Shigeru Otani.
